Dr. Jennifer Denbow, and interlocutor Dr. Brian BeatonDr. Jennifer Denbow, and interlocutor Dr. Brian Beaton, engaged in a lively and engaging discussion of Dr. Denbow’s new book Governed Through Choice. Dr. Denbow’s book centers around the argument that having more choices doesn’t necessarily make us more autonomous or free. Using reproductive politics, politics and law to investigate the interconnections between technology, communities of expertise, and law and policy, Dr. Denbow and Dr. Beaton explored competing traditions of autonomy and the use of technology and information, particularly as it applies to instances of reproductive health.

Political Science students

Ms. Kelli Seybolt joined a university-wide group of students and faculty to discuss careers for Cal Poly students in Washington, DC. Ms. Seybolt, who serves as director of International Affairs and Foreign Policy Advisor to the Commandant of the Coast Guard, was the CLA Honored Alumna in 2014.

Ms. Seybolt talked with students about how to leverage internships and first employment positions to create a professional network to help locate and secure future jobs. She also emphasized the importance of tailoring resumes for the screening process and how to locate jobs and internships through USAJobs. Students participated in a lively Q&A session, followed by a lunch, hosted by POLS Alumna Shari Mullins.

New Student Welcome!

New student welcome

This fall, we welcomed 104 first year, 12 transfer and 11 graduate students to the department of Political Science. Of the over 1,100 applicants to the department, these students represent the best of the best with an average incoming high school GPA of 3.78 and with a wealth of diverse experiences and interests. Classes have started for the fall quarter; the faculty and staff of the department are excited to see these students start their Cal Poly Political Science experience.

Cal Poly Alumnus and Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Jeff Denham (B.A., Political Science, 1992), will speak on his role as a member of Congress from 11 am to noon Thursday, April 2, in the Advanced Technology Laboratories (Building 7), Keck Lab (Room 2).
