Winner of John H. Lynn Award for Undergraduate Outstanding Service: Gracie Babatola
Choosing to attend Cal Poly for my political science degree was undoubtedly one of the most transformative decisions I made as a high school senior. From day one, the department’s unwavering commitment to the "learn by doing" ethos left an indelible mark on my academic journey.
Faculty went above and beyond to meet students, like myself, where we were, fostering a nurturing environment that encouraged personal and intellectual growth. Professors like Dr. Battle, Dr. Denbow, Dr. Zhang, and more not only taught me the intricacies of political science but also inspired me to push the boundaries of my comfort zone. It was here that I found the courage to step into roles I had previously hesitated to pursue, such as running for student body president.
The Poli Sci department's unique emphasis on practical experience and hands-on learning allowed me to apply my political science knowledge in real-world situations, from organizing student government campaigns to engaging in community activism. This approach not only honed my skills in political science but also broadened my understanding of the complex, interconnected world we live in. For that, I am forever grateful.
